Since race relations constitute an urgent problem for the community as a whole, often demanding immediate social and political action at local or national level, social scientists have tended to concentrate their investigations in areas of conflict or in specific situations defined by perceived social needs rather than by the considerations of an academic discipline. As a result, theoretical interpretation has proceeded mainly on an ad hoc basis, and insufficient attention has been given to relating this field of inquiry to general sociological principles.
